High Cholesterol Wool Grease

Wool Grease

Wool grease is secreted from a sheep’s sebaceous glands, adhering to the wool fibres during the wool growing cycle. This gives wool its waxy feel, protecting sheep from weather and seasonal climatic changes.

We extract wool grease from wool during the scouring process. Greasy wool is first removed during shearing and then transported to us. Wool scouring is a washing and cleaning process which extracts the grease.

A state of the art three stage recovery process continually removes wool grease from the wool as it is being washed. Recovered wool grease is then collected, cleaned and prepared for sale.

WoolWorks is the only supplier of pure New Zealand wool grease in the world. We have many environmental certifications. Our wool grease is accredited under the internationally recognised New Zealand Fern Mark quality programme.

Wool grease applications

Wool grease is a versatile natural product used in many applications including the production of lanolin and lanolin derivatives. It also has a consistently high cholesterol content and is rich in vitamin D3.

Lanolin is a semi-solid wax which contains a mixture of sterols and medium to long chain fatty acids. The properties of refined lanolin from wool grease function in similar ways to human skin lipids, making it a very skin-compatible ingredient.

Lanolin has long been described as a wonder of nature and has found uses in moisturisers, emollients, emulsifiers and ointment bases for hundreds of years.
